Whittier Choice Phase III, also known as The Amp at Flat 9 at Whittier, is a major mixed-income housing development in Roxbury / Lower Roxbury, Boston. The project is part of the larger Whittier Choice redevelopment effort and includes a 12-story high-rise residential building with approximately 172 apartment homes, ground-floor commercial and community space, and a total combined building area of approximately 250,000 square feet. The broader redevelopment program is an important affordable and mixed-income housing initiative serving the Roxbury community.
Engineering Fire Protection, LLC provided Tier 2 fire protection design services for Dimeo Construction Company, the project’s general contractor. EFP’s design scope included the fire sprinkler system, standpipe system, and fire pump system, supporting the building’s residential, commercial, amenity, and shared community spaces.
Because of the building height and system pressure demands, the project required more than a conventional sprinkler layout. EFP developed a cost-effective high-rise fire protection design using a coordinated high-pressure zone and low-pressure zone approach. This strategy helped balance sprinkler and standpipe performance requirements while avoiding unnecessary system complexity and equipment cost. By carefully coordinating the sprinkler, standpipe, and fire pump design, EFP helped support a practical, code-compliant fire protection solution for a large urban high-rise housing project.
