Fire Protection Design, Voice Evacuation Fire Alarm Design & NFPA 241 Construction Fire Safety Planning

The 21 Notre Dame project involved the fire protection upgrade of an existing school building in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The building includes a basement and two above-grade floors, with an overall building area of approximately 33,000 square feet. The facility was formerly occupied by Benjamin Banneker Charter Public School and was being upgraded to support future school occupancy.

Engineering Fire Protection, LLC provided comprehensive fire protection engineering services to support the renovation and code compliance process. EFP’s scope included field survey, fire sprinkler design, voice evacuation fire alarm design, hydrant flow test, construction administration support, building code consulting and preparation of an NFPA 241 Construction Fire Safety and Impairment Plan.
The project required careful planning because the existing building did not have a sprinkler system and the existing fire alarm system needed to be replaced with a new voice evacuation system appropriate for school use. EFP helped establish a practical upgrade strategy, coordinated the new sprinkler and fire alarm systems with existing building conditions, and developed construction-phase fire safety procedures to maintain life safety during the renovation. This support helped the owner and project team move the school upgrade forward with a clear permitting, construction, and fire/life safety compliance path.
